Playstation VI

As part of their permanent collection-show, Design Museum Gent has dedicated a space to the public to interact and participate. Here visitors of all ages can actively engage with selected themes and experience them in a non-visual way. Based on the theme “Connections” - including technical, human, and artistic connections, OpenStructures has created an interactive installation in relation to items from the collection.

OS_Studio had already made several versions of PlayStations as a method for playing, designing, and building for people of all ages. In PlayStation VI, they created a puzzle of components based on items from the museum’s collection:
The Fledermaus Chair designed in 1907 by Joseph Hoffmann served as a starting point. It was originally designed for the Cabaret Fledermaus in Vienna, but developed over the years into a wide variety of sitting elements, armchairs, and benches designed by Hoffmann and produced  by Jacob and Josef Kohn. Tables by Albert van huffel share similar characteristics, while totems by Ettore Sottsass jr. and many more pieces inspired the puzzle further.

Those and other items were synchronised to the standardised dimensions of OpenStructures and reproduced as modular relatives. Accompanied with textile, plastic and metal parts from the OS database, this PlayStation invites the public to freely experiment, recreate descendants of the collection, or invent new assemblies based on or inspired by models from the past for the future.

Playstation VI includes woodscrews and recipients by Diane Steverlynck & Maud Vande Veire, baskets by Packbags Studio, hooks and shelves by Atelier Ternier and textiles by Nele Demeulemeester.
